Essential LoyaltyEssential Loyalty Review (2026)

Growth & RevenueResearched assessment · by Daniel HaketUpdated 2026-08-22

Growth tools only earn their keep if they move a real number — leads, conversions or revenue — not just activity. So where does Essential Loyalty actually fit?

The honest bottom line. Worth it for Shopify stores with genuine repeat business that want a loyalty programme priced on the orders it actually influences rather than on total volume — and stores selling in person as well as online, since POS support arrives at $10 and the free tier already carries VIP tiers and referrals that competitors usually charge for. Skip it once your customers buy once and rarely return.

What Essential Loyalty does

Shopify loyalty and rewards app metered on loyalty-influenced orders rather than total orders, with VIP tiers and referrals on the free plan.

Pricing (2026)

(read 2026-08-22 on apps.shopify.com/essential-loyalty-rewards-program) Four tiers, and the meter is the whole decision. It counts loyalty-influenced orders — repeat sales and referrals — rather than every order your store takes, which the plan text states outright. Free covers up to 250 of those and is unusually complete: the point program, VIP tiers, a referral program, twelve-plus ways to earn points, product, cart, popup and account placements, built-in email notifications with Klaviyo, and discount, gift, shipping and credit rewards.

Starter is $10 a month for up to 500, adding a dedicated loyalty landing page, full customisation, Shopify Flow, POS support for in-store loyalty and 24/7 human support. Essential is $24 for up to 1,500, adding loyalty status on the customer orders and profile pages and points in product cards. Growth is $79 for unlimited loyalty orders, with API integrations on request, white-glove onboarding and priority support.

Paid plans carry a 14-day free trial. Charges are in USD and recur every 30 days. Developer Essential Apps; the app runs in twenty languages and works with Checkout, Customer accounts, Shopify POS, Shopify Flow, Judge.me, Klaviyo and Omnisend. Rating 5.0 from 438 reviews, of which 430 are five-star and one is one-star. Plans change — always verify the live price on their site.

The catch

Two things to read closely before you pay. The meter is honest — loyalty-influenced orders, not all orders — and that is genuinely in your favour, but it also means you cannot work out your tier from your order count. A store doing 3,000 orders a month with little repeat business may sit on Free; one doing 800 with a loyal base may not. Measure your repeat and referral orders for a month before you choose.

The second is an oddity on the listing itself. The free plan advertises an 'Advanced loyalty point program' while Starter at $10 advertises a 'Free loyalty point program', which read literally means the paid tier offers less on that line. It is almost certainly a labelling slip rather than a real downgrade, but it is the kind of line worth confirming with support before you upgrade for it.

When the paid plan is worth it

Work out the cost per loyalty order and the ladder reads differently than the monthly prices suggest. Starter is $10 for 500, which is two cents an order. Essential is $24 for 1,500, which is one and a half cents. So the middle tier is cheaper per order than the one below it, and the step up pays for itself the moment you pass roughly 500 loyalty-influenced orders a month.

But volume is often not what moves you. Three things sit behind the $10 line regardless of how small you are: the dedicated loyalty landing page, full customisation, and POS support for in-store loyalty. If you sell in a shop as well as online, you are on Starter at any volume, and the 250 free orders are beside the point.

The top step is the one to think about hardest. Growth is $79 against Essential's $24, and what it buys is the removal of a ceiling plus onboarding and API access on request. At 1,500 loyalty orders a month you are a substantial store, so the question is not whether $55 is affordable but whether you need the API. If you do not, the honest move is to stay on Essential until the cap actually bites.

How to actually use Essential Loyalty

Start on Free and do not choose a tier for at least a month. The meter counts loyalty-influenced orders, so the only number that decides your plan is one you do not have yet: how many of your orders are repeat purchases or referrals. Running free for a month produces it.

While that runs, set up the parts that make the programme work rather than the ones that make it look complete. Twelve-plus earning rules are available, but a programme that rewards a signup, a purchase and a review covers most of the value, and every extra rule is another thing to explain. The placements matter more than the rules: product page, cart, popup and account are all on Free, and the cart placement is where points turn into a second order.

If you sell in a shop as well as online, skip the deliberation. POS support sits behind the $10 line, so in-store loyalty puts you on Starter at any volume, and the sooner both channels feed the same points balance the sooner the programme means anything to a customer standing at your counter.

Frequently asked questions

Is Essential Loyalty worth it for a small team?

It depends on whether you have the bottleneck it solves. Small teams get the most out of this category when one clear problem is already costing real hours or revenue; buying ahead of that just adds cost and another login. Price it against the hours or lost deals it removes, not against its feature list, and start on the smallest plan that covers the job.

Who should not use Essential Loyalty?

Skip it if your customers buy once and rarely return, because a loyalty programme has nothing to work with and the free tier will show you that within a month; or you need deep API work from the start, since integrations are 'on request' and only on the $79 tier. Buying a tool to fix a problem you don't have yet just adds cost and another login to manage.
