Essentials Plus $199/year: 20 IPs, real-time plugin updates, basic PDF/HTML reporting, still non-commercial, free for verified students and instructors. Nessus Professional $4,790/year, $9,330.95 for two years, $13,637.54 for three — the first tier licensed for commercial use.

Tenable confirmed on 28 July that the links are repaired; we re-tested them that day and the link now works again, lands on the same Nessus product page, and does pay us a commission. This is serious, enterprise-grade security tooling with an enterprise price and a learning curve — not a set-and-forget scanner. You need someone who can act on the findings, or you're paying for reports nobody reads.

Recurring themes from the buyer-review sites listed at the foot of this page, read in August 2026. We have not run Tenable ourselves, so this is other buyers' experience rather than ours. We summarise it here because the complaints are usually the part a vendor page leaves out.
- • Accuracy and depth of vulnerability identification is what security teams rate — 4.5 on G2 across 300 reviews, 8.4 out of 10 on PeerSpot.
- • Easier to run than its depth suggests, and the detail in the findings is what reviewers act on.
- • Cost is the dominant complaint. Nessus Pro runs around $3,390 for a one-year licence, and reviewers say maintaining it is what limits who can use it.
- • Reporting is the weak spot, particularly at larger organisations — expect to build your own layer on top for board-level output.
When the paid plan is worth it
Nessus Essentials is free, but read the license before you plan around it: a 30-day license, 5 IPs, strictly non-commercial use, plugin updates delayed 30 days, and no reporting, data export, compliance checks or technical support. When it expires Tenable does not retain your scan data, so you re-download the free version and start over, or pay. Essentials Plus at $199/year adds 20 IPs, real-time plugin updates, basic PDF/HTML reporting and year-long data retention, still non-commercial, and free for verified students and instructors.
Professional at $4,790/year is the first tier licensed for commercial use: unlimited IPs, more than 450 pre-configured templates, and compliance and configuration checks with audit templates for internal PCI network, policy compliance, SCAP and OVAL. Two- and three-year terms cost $9,330.95 and $13,637.54. Budget support separately: 24x365 phone, email, community and chat is a $400/year add-on. How to actually use Tenable
Tenable's documentation lays out five steps: Prepare, Install and Configure Tenable Nessus, Create and Configure Scans, View and Analyze Scan Results, and Refine Tenable Nessus Settings. You need an activation code, then you run a host discovery scan to identify assets and build a first scan from a Tenable-provided template. That first unauthenticated scan is surface-level; the work is in credentialed scanning. One person's published Windows lab walkthrough, run against a local Windows 10 virtual machine, needed a string of changes first.
Set the Remote Registry service to start automatically, turn on network discovery and file/printer sharing, and add a registry key so the remote account could connect. Then disable the domain, private and public firewall profiles and reboot — after which the same host showed significantly more vulnerabilities. Those last steps strip a machine's defences and belong on an isolated test host only; do not copy them onto a production system.
Note which tier you start on: compliance checks are Professional-only, so an Essentials or Essentials Plus install covers vulnerability scanning alone.

Can I use the free Nessus Essentials at work?
No. Read on 16 September 2026 on Tenable's Nessus Essentials page, which calls it a 30-day free licence for up to 5 IPs and says it is “strictly for non-commercial use and is not engineered for enterprise or production environments”, suited to short evaluations, proof-of-concept testing or a very small home network. Essentials Plus is the step up for hobbyists — real-time plugin updates, a 20-IP scan limit, basic PDF/HTML reporting and year-long data retention — and is still non-commercial, though verified students and instructors can get it free for a year through the Nessus for Education programme. The first tier licensed for commercial use is Nessus Professional, at $4,790 a year.
What should I weigh before buying IT & Productivity software?
Judge it on evidence rather than adjectives. Look for a published security page, single sign-on and role controls on the plan you would actually buy (they are often gated to higher tiers), a status page with real incident history, and a clear answer on where your data is stored. If the tool will hold anything sensitive, those four answers matter more than any feature comparison.
