DextDext Review (2026)

Financial OperationsResearched assessment · by Daniel HaketUpdated 2026-08-12

Finance tools are trust-critical: the bar is accuracy, compliance and real support, not flashy features. So where does Dext actually fit?

The honest bottom line. Worth it for accountants, bookkeepers and growing businesses drowning in receipts who want fast, accurate capture flowing straight into Xero, QuickBooks or Sage. Skip it once you're a sole trader with few receipts, or you want all-in-one accounting — Dext only does the capture layer.

What Dext does

Receipt and invoice capture that extracts the data and feeds it into Xero, QuickBooks or Sage. It is the capture layer, not accounting software, so you still need one of those. From about £24/month on Starter, and extraction accuracy varies enough to need manual correction.

Pricing (2026)

From ~£24/mo (Starter) to £42 (Growing) and £84 (Business) — roughly $31–239 depending on plan and region (2026). Plans change — always verify the live price on their site.

The catch

It's a data-capture layer, not accounting software — it feeds Xero, QuickBooks or Sage, so you still need one of those. Extraction accuracy varies and sometimes needs manual fixes, the UI is tricky for beginners, the mobile app is more limited than desktop, and sole traders find it pricey.

What buyers report about Dext

Recurring themes from Capterra, GetApp, Software Advice and Tekpon, read in August 2026. We have not run Dext ourselves, so this is other buyers' experience rather than ours. We summarise it here because the complaints are usually the part a vendor page leaves out.

What they praise
  • Extraction accuracy on crumpled, photographed receipts is what reviewers name, and it is the whole job. 700,000+ businesses and 12,000 accounting firms on it.
  • Bundled pricing for accounting firms is transparent, which reviewers contrast favourably with the SME side.
What they complain about
  • The pricing structure is inflexible, and reviewers describe recent increases as frustrating.
  • Cost rises significantly with business growth, and reviewers say it only pays if you use it heavily. From about $25 for SME plans, $199.99 for firms.
  • Reaching customer service is reported as difficult.
Best for: accountants, bookkeepers and growing businesses drowning in receipts who want fast, accurate capture flowing straight into Xero, QuickBooks or Sage.

The natural comparison is Hubdoc or manual entry — the free-with-Xero and the do-it-yourself routes. Decide by which one fits the job above, not by the louder brand.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dext safe to run my finances through?

The bar here is higher than features. Check who actually holds the money and under what licence, whether client funds are segregated, what audit trail and permission controls you get, and how support behaves when something goes wrong mid-transaction. Anything touching payments should be able to answer those in writing; if it cannot, that is your answer.

Who should not use Dext?

Skip it if you're a sole trader with few receipts (pricey for low volume), or you want all-in-one accounting — Dext only does the capture layer. Buying a tool to fix a problem you don't have yet just adds cost and another login to manage.
