CometChatCometChat Review (2026)

Communication & VoiceResearched assessment · by Daniel HaketUpdated 2026-07-23

Communication tools win on reliability and coverage — every missed call or message is a customer who quietly moves on. So where does CometChat actually fit?

The honest bottom line. Worth it for product teams that want proven in-app text/voice/video chat with SDKs for every major framework. Skip it once your app is pre-revenue with growing users.

What CometChat does

In-app text, voice and video chat infrastructure to embed into your own software — secure and scalable, with a free developer plan and, via the new Air release, fully on-prem or air-gapped deployment for regulated enterprises.

Pricing (2026)

(2026) Free Build tier for development ($0/mo, all features, up to 100 users). Paid tiers are now published: Basic $239/mo and Advanced $359/mo, both billed annually (paying monthly costs ~20% more). Above Advanced, Enterprise is custom, starting from 10k MAU. Overages stack on top: $0.10 per MAU and $1 per concurrent connection beyond the 5%-of-MAU included allotment; messages and storage are unlimited, with 6-month message retention. The catch

The pricing cliff is the honest headline: from a 100-MAU free tier straight to ~$239/mo is a brutal jump for an early-stage app, and users report plan structures changing under them — so model your MAU growth curve and the overage math before you architect around it. Chat infrastructure is sticky by nature; the time to compare vendors is before launch, not after.

Best for: product teams that want proven in-app text/voice/video chat with SDKs for every major framework, without building messaging infrastructure themselves.

The natural comparison is Stream or Sendbird — the premium chat-SDK peers — all three are MAU-priced; compare at YOUR projected MAU including overages, not at the entry tier. Decide by which one fits the job above, not by the louder brand.

My ex-banker filter is simple: does CometChat remove a real cost — time, errors, missed revenue — bigger than what it charges? If the job above is genuinely yours, it's worth a look. We never publish fake or “exclusive” prices, so always confirm the current plan on their site.

Frequently asked questions

Will CometChat work for a remote or distributed team?

Generally yes, since this category is built for it, but the details that bite are timezone handling, how per-seat cost scales as the team spreads, and whether numbers, routing or coverage exist in the countries your people actually sit in. Availability varies far more by country than the marketing pages suggest, so check your specific regions before committing.

Who should not use CometChat?

Skip it if your app is pre-revenue with growing users (the free-to-paid cliff will hit mid-growth), or chat is peripheral enough that a support widget covers it. Buying a tool to fix a problem you don't have yet just adds cost and another login to manage.

This is a researched assessment, not a hands-on test — where we've used a tool ourselves, we say so explicitly. We name what each tool is genuinely good and bad at, and we earn a commission only if you sign up, at no cost to you.
